MCP primitives: who controls what

PrimitiveControlled byWhat it is
ToolsThe modelActions the model decides to call. Something executes.
ResourcesThe applicationReadable content (catalogues, reference data) made available as context. Nothing executes.
PromptsThe userTemplated messages a person picks, often shown as slash commands
Exam guide vs todaySampling and roots are deprecated as of MCP specification 2026-07-28, though an exam may still ask what they do. On transports, the specification's standard transports are stdio (local child process) and Streamable HTTP. HTTP with SSE has been deprecated since 2025-03-26. WebSocket isn't a standard MCP transport.

A shared server that needs a per-person credential: project scope plus environment variable expansion (${VAR}) in .mcp.json. The configuration is shared; the secret isn't.

tool_choice

Exam guide vs todayThe exam guide still covers forcing a tool with any or a named tool. Claude Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 reject forced tool_choice with an error. On those models, use auto with strict tool use, or structured outputs, and enforce ordering in code. Haiku 5.5 still accepts a forced call, but the response starts with the tool call and has no thinking block.

Built-in tools

Read, Write, Edit, Bash, Grep and Glob. Use Grep to search file contents, Glob to match file paths, Edit for a targeted change to part of a file, and Read with an offset and limit for a slice of a large file.

Exam guide vs todayThe exam guide lists Grep and Glob as built-in tools. In current Claude Code on macOS, Linux and WSL they're left out of the default tool set, and Claude searches through Bash instead. They're still the default on Windows and can be re-enabled. For the exam, know what each one is for.
